This home seamlessly merges modern sensibilities with the warmth of traditional culture, striking a captivating balance between two distinct worlds. The space remains deeply rooted in its heritage, reflecting the values and identity of its owners. This stunning home, crafted by Mumbai’s 4th Dimension, embodies the evolving design landscape of India, where traditional influences meet modern creativity and innovation.
THE DESIGN BRIEF
Each element of the design tells a story of Indian artistry. From the intricate handmade details to the self-designed features, this residence reflects an ethos of authenticity. “Our client’s vision was to create a warm, peaceful, and timeless home that would be admired for years to come. They desired a space that embodied simplicity with a touch of traditional elegance, tailored to accommodate a family of six, including the couple, their children, and parents,” says Mihir Kotak, Co-Founder, 4th Dimension. In response, the architects Rinki and Mihir, envisioned a décor that seamlessly integrated Indian elements, evoking a sense of nostalgia and connection to the past. “By incorporating traditional touches, we aimed to craft a space that not only honors its roots but also becomes a timeless haven,” adds Rinki Kotak.
A CULTURAL OASIS
The home’s elegant lobby sets the tone for a sophisticated and culturally rich experience. The space is adorned with traditional Indian Thikri art, while a unique metal signage welcomes visitors. The main door features a stunning Haveli-inspired metal double door design, clad in warm veneer. Upon entering, a small foyer greets guests, topped with a beautifully crafted metal art piece. This intimate space flows effortlessly into the expansive living room, which boasts an attached balcony. The living area is furnished with exquisite, handmade pieces crafted from reclaimed wood, complemented by vibrant tapestries featuring heritage and ethnic prints.
The balcony offers a charming Indian-style baithak seating area, complete with a textured wall featuring a captivating story. This thoughtful design element adds depth and character to the space, creating a unique cultural oasis that invites relaxation and contemplation.
SEAMLESS FLAIR
The printed floor showcases traditional patterns in a kaleidoscope of colours, while the cement floor guides the flow of the space with its lines and patterns. The daughter’s room is a customised haven, designed with her needs and inputs in mind, featuring a touch of teenage flair. The showstopper here is the pink onyx bathroom.
One of the most striking features of the home is the incorporation of Indian and Mughal history through paintings and prints on each bedroom door, adding a unique cultural touch. The corridor leads to a charming study nook, adorned with Sabyasachi wallpapers that create a sophisticated ambiance. A jali sliding door adds an extra layer of visual interest, casting intricate designs and shadows in the sunlight.
The master bedroom boasts a panelled look with cane and moulds, keeping traditional formats alive. A lavish walk-in wardrobe leads to a stunning white marble inlayed washroom, complete with a luxurious bathtub – an iconic symbol of luxury. The parents’ room is a peaceful retreat, featuring intricately carved Kota stone with scooping patterns and veneer accents for added warmth and balance.
“We aimed to evoke a sense of nostalgia through our design, incorporating artworks, culture, and Indian craftsmanship. By subtly weaving these elements together, we drew inspiration from the past, creating a space that feels timeless and deeply rooted in tradition. This thoughtful blend of old and new is what led us to this project ‘TIMELESS ROOTS’,” concludes Rinki.
