#aplusdhomes: Crafted by Cubism Architects, this Coimbatore home creates an interesting play of light and shadows

The client envisioned a space that was in constant dialogue with the outdoors— a space that constantly interacted with verandahs, sprawling terraces and lush courtyards. All this without compromising on their privacy. The brief in that sense veered a bit towards being paradoxical. “We responded to this brief by creating a space that embodies a hierarchy of privacy with a public facade that seeks not to attract undue attention and shelter their occupants while opening out to courtyards and terraces. It acts as a screen and provides a recourse from the frantic pace of the city,” says architect Roopashree Parvatikar, Co-founder, Cubism Architects.

At more than 8000sqft, space was not a constraint. Navigating the space to achieve the right balance of openness and privacy was the real challenge. The architects created a network of cantilevered planes and projected volumes to fulfil the demand for a sense of openness within the enclosure. Exposed brick and concrete on the walls elevate and emphasise the character of the house.

“We created a clean composition of internal volumes and voids to allow penetration of natural light and fresh air. This also enables the spaces to flow into each other while merging with the outdoors,” explains architect Prasanna Parvatikar.

This residence is designed to immerse its residents in nature; and it’s obvious from the first glance. One enters through a lush landscaped garden. Exposed concrete and natural stone add to the textural diversity of the space. The wooden ceiling in the sit-out area and the raw textured flooring blends with the landscape beautifully to provide a stunning experience to the user.

The foyer directly leads to the passage which flows to the kitchen, dining and family living spaces with the formal living space to the left and glazing on the side walls to give a glimpse of the open to sky green courtyard to the right.
